Staring into the Abyss

It's been quite some time (2.5 months roughly...) since I last posted. It was just a few days after the election and I was still basking in the mediocrity of an otherwise bizarre Presidential race. I was disappointed to say the least. Barack Obama was certainly not my choice but then again, neither was John McCain.
Before I go any further, I just want to say that I haven't come to the conclusions I'm about to write about because Obama won. I want to make that perfectly clear...this is not sour grapes.
In the closing weeks of the election, several things became readily apparent to me:
1) Nothing was going to stop Barack Obama from winning
2) The U.S. (and the European) media were not interested in covering Presidential issues...they were more interested in stoking the flames of Barack Obama the Celebrity
3) The vast majority of U.S. voters (Liberal, Conservative, and Independent) don't have the mental capacity to actually vote in a Presidential election
4) The United States is dying
I'm trying hard not to convey a sense of humor or sarcasm here. Four months ago, I would have been the first guy to stand up and wave the flag proclaiming the greatness of the United States. I was incredibly naïve. Don't misunderstand me...I do believe that the foundation and principles the United States was built on was the height of human civilization. Those days, however, and those ideals for the most part, have been dead for quite some time.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic."
The man had some fantastic quotes, many of which have managed to stay with us through the ages. This one however, rings with a resounding truth...a truth that unfortunately has sealed this nation's fate. Ben Franklin's fears have come true. We now live in a nation populated by a people that for the most part, expect and demand that their government solve their problems. And this government is stepping up to the plate to satisfy those demands in a major way.
Through the years, specifically since the New Deal era (1933-1941), the United States government has gradually, and in some cases rapidly, expanded in ways that were never intended. What started as millions of dollars slowly transformed into trillions of dollars as politicians (and an eager public) quickly learned that the best way to remain in power was to buy the loyalty of the people that voted them in. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "one man's necessity is another man's pork". It's completely true. I would bet my right arm that you could ask any voter if they thought Congressmen and Senators were spend happy and they would say 'yes'. However, if you were to ask them if their congressman was on the up and up, they'd tell you that he/she was bringing badly needed programs and money back home to the district. It's a ridiculously retarded system. And its a system that could only thrive within a nation that puts flash ahead of substance.
A couple of months ago, our elected leaders allowed over $700 billion to flood into the hands of a select few in order to "save" our banking institutions. Today, the newly elected Congress, lead by our newly elected President, is heralding an almost $1 trillion "stimulus" package to help our ailing economy. According to governmental accounting only about 3% of that 1 trillion will be in our economy by 2010. Keep in mind that we're being told that this is needed to quickly jolt our economy back to life. What it actually is a one trillion dollar late January Christmas present to thousands of useless entitlement programs around the country. The so-called "tax cuts" in this embarassment are actually checks to those people who don't pay income taxes anyway. It's a joke. It should be treated as a joke. And if we had any leadership in Washington, D.C., this nonsense would be laughed out of town, with its creators being dragged along behind it. Instead we have a population where the stupid overwhelmingly outnumber the ones governed by common sense. We have ourselves to thank for this.
Those that "lead" allow me to segue into my second theme...one that will hopefully merge in perfectly with our nation's downfall. I start it with a question...
When was the last time you were truly inspired by someone in power? When, if ever, have you looked at an elected official and thought to yourself, 'that person is a leader...i'd follow them anywhere'?
The ability to inspire and lead is, in my opinion, one of the two strongest abilities known to man. The other is religious conviction. Both of these can be extraordinarily good...or be the foundation for an incredible evil. We don't have to worry about either in this country however, because we lack true leadership and, due to our laws, faith is limited to the individual.
Our lack of leadership for several decades...our lack of unity as a nation...the severe lack of common sense...the failure to realize that contrary to the crap being shoved down our, and our kids' throats, there is good and evil and right and wrong in our world (and the difference between them is not difficult to make) has lead us to the point where we are today. As I alluded to above, we've finally reached the point in our society where the number of people who don't care (or care for the wrong reasons) severely outnumber those that get it. This goes beyond Liberal and Conservative. (It's a carefully guarded secret that there's not a lot of difference between the two anymore.) And to top it all off, there's no one among us that can seize the reins of this catastrophe and try to fix it. It'll take the latter to fix the former. My only hope is that it's not going to take an epic event with catastrophic consequences to jolt us into seeing the truth and correcting our failures. I'm not sure how much more our nation can take before the House comes crumbling down around us.
I'm sure you're thinking, 'so genius, what's your brilliant idea?'
Hopefully, over the coming days, I'll be able to present in a coherent manner how the world should work. We'll see how well I do.
